Deck access, a lift that may or may not take a wardrobe, fire doors on every landing, and a great many neighbours whose day you are about to be part of.
What that actually means
The lift is the whole question, and the answer is often no. Plenty of estate lifts will not take a mattress upright or a sofa at all, and where that is true everything goes down a stair with a turn on every landing.
Fire doors are everywhere and they must not be propped. It is the obvious shortcut and it is the one thing in a shared residential building you genuinely cannot do, however many trips it saves.
The deck is a walkway, not a corridor. It is how your neighbours get to their own front doors, and filling it with furniture while you work is how a straightforward move becomes an argument with somebody you will see every day.
Parking is allocated, and the bay nearest the block belongs to somebody. A removals vehicle in a resident’s bay is a problem that arrives quickly and personally.
Sound carries along a deck in a way it does not in a street. Early and late both need more care here than they do above a shop.
What we do about it
Establish the lift dimensions before the day rather than discovering them with a mattress
Never prop a fire door, whatever it costs us in trips
Keep the deck usable rather than staging everything along it
Find out which bay we can actually use, from the housing office or the managing agent
The thing to do
Tell your neighbours, especially the ones either side and the one directly below. Most people are fine about a move; almost nobody is fine about a surprise.
